    A fascinating true story ballerina murder mystery taking place at a critical period in Russia s social, artistic and cultural history This is the first book length study of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of direct contemporary and close personal friend of Balanchine and Danilova, Lida Ivanova, who drowned in a boating accident on the eve of the small group of friends intended departure from revolutionary Russia The facts surrounding the accident are contradictory in dif A fascinating true story ballerina murder mystery taking place at a critical period in Russia s social, artistic and cultural history This is the first book length study of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of direct contemporary and close personal friend of Balanchine and Danilova, Lida Ivanova, who drowned in a boating accident on the eve of the small group of friends intended departure from revolutionary Russia The facts surrounding the accident are contradictory in different sources Danilova s memoirs, for example which I am currently reading tells a slightly different story, but both Kendall s research and Danilova s account of the affair makes it clear that Lida was murdered, most likely for her inappropriate friendships with people in high up places and her intention to leave Russia, perhaps with dangerous information There are lots of clues to mull over For example, the inexplicably delayed exit visas for the small group of friends suddenly turned up immediately after Lida s death Her parents called for an investigation into her death there was none The three survivors were seen carousing at a dinner the following evening Close friends knew that Lida could swim strongly The theatre made no mention of her death despite she was a hugely well loved and popular ballerina at the beginning of a very promising career Supposedly a diver was hired by Ivanova s boyfriend to look for her he reported seeing her body with a bullet in the head, but her body was never recovered The behaviour of the motorboat which caused the collision was inexplicable I won t give away all the evidence in this fascinating story, suffice to say if you have even the slightest interest in Balanchine s early life, inspiration and motivations then this book is a must read Even if you just love Balanchine s Serenade which ballet fan doesn t then read this and watch that ballet again For me, ballet history does not get better than this I loved it

    It is Lidia s story that drew me to the book,so than Balanchine s And it is her character that steals the spotlight Her death on the eve of the tour that both dancers had planned to make and from which Balanchine never returned , remains a mystery and an irresistible cautionary tale in the longer history of ballet as a plaything of power And though it takes all of 220 pages to reach this dramatic moment, it is worth the wait.The historical record is understandably much slimmer on young It is Lidia s story that drew me to the book,so than Balanchine s And it is her character that steals the spotlight Her death on the eve of the tour that both dancers had planned to make and from which Balanchine never returned , remains a mystery and an irresistible cautionary tale in the longer history of ballet as a plaything of power And though it takes all of 220 pages to reach this dramatic moment, it is worth the wait.The historical record is understandably much slimmer on young Ivanova than on Balanchivadze, yet it is she that shines brighter in this biography We are introduced to her as a girl with a doting father, a career military mechanic determined to make his daughter not just a dancer, but a scholar and star of the Russian cultural capital Kendall is patient with her story, lavish in her details of the physical challenges for a dancer coming of age through revolution and civil war She introduces a huge cast of characters, but it is her descriptions of hardship, chaos, hunger and cold so antithetical to the ideals of classical ballet training that impresses the most This is a book to champion Russia s place as supreme in ballet history.Full review here

    Since I have a love of reading both dance and Russian Revolution history this book satisfies I agree with other reviews that Kendall can be a bit over the top in her speculations of Balanchine s and other dancer s feelings motivations, but the detailed research and piecing together of this little known early history of the great ballet choreographer and other ballet greats, fascinated me I especially enjoyed learning of the Imperial Theaters histories and transformations during the Revolut Since I have a love of reading both dance and Russian Revolution history this book satisfies I agree with other reviews that Kendall can be a bit over the top in her speculations of Balanchine s and other dancer s feelings motivations, but the detailed research and piecing together of this little known early history of the great ballet choreographer and other ballet greats, fascinated me I especially enjoyed learning of the Imperial Theaters histories and transformations during the Revolution and the workings ties corruptions between the Tsarist court, army and the ballet company and schools

    This book captures the essence of Balanchine s early career in Petrograd, and the influence of the Russian ballerina Lidia Ivanova on his choreography Kendall does an excellent job of relating the social and political changes taking place in Russia at the time, and describes how the art of ballet survived through this turbulence Less convincing is her argument that Lidia inspired Balanchine s later work For the laypersonexplanation would have been helpful.

    This is a text that will gladly find it s place on any dance lovers shelf Balanchine was certainly a master of his craft as is apparent as is well conveyed in this book One of the nicest books I have read in 2014
